Why ReSearch
Participating in research is important for medical students to be competitive in residency applications. As medical students, we struggled to find research opportunities aligning with our interests and career goals. We realized this experience is common among our classmates. Finding research opportunities was described as ‘‘time-consuming’, as research is often unadvertised and thus unavailable. Advertised projects were also often unavailable for other reasons, such as invalid contact information, or projects restricted to students of a specific school. Additionally, medical students lacked experience crafting research CVs, finding grants, and understanding which projects are achievable and helpful for their future.
What is ReSearch
ReSearchMD is a national research website aimed squarely at medical students. It serves as a large-scale, interactive database to connect medical students with researchers. Simply, we match students’ desired research discipline, location, and availability (short vs long term) with available research projects. ReSearchMD also provides helpful research skills to create CVs, abstracts, and poster presentations, and find characteristics of desirable projects. Statistical knowledge is also taught, through compiling excellent, publicly available resources. Additionally, our website compiles Canadian grants available to medical students, for simple access.
The Goal
The objective of ReSearchMD is to help medical students every step of the way through their research journey. We answer common questions, provide practical advice and reduce barriers students face when obtaining research positions, with a streamlined pairing of students with research projects. ReSearchMD exposes students to projects across Canada, to foster national engagement and serve as a networking opportunity. This will promote connections for residency beyond their current medical schools. We hope that increasing the medical student population performing research will help advance Canadian medical research, and foster engagement in our next generation of physician-scientists.
